Knestel Technologie & Elektronik GmbH is developing pioneering sensor solutions for process and room air monitoring as part of the BMBF-funded MoPlas2Dekon-Pro research project. The aim was to develop high-precision gas sensors for safe and efficient in-process control in room disinfection – with a particular focus on optical sensors for ozone measurement.
Together with the partner company Plasmatreat, a compact, high-performance sensor system was developed that was specially designed for integration into mobile, battery-operated plasma systems. Thanks to modern NDUV technology (non-dispersive ultraviolet spectroscopy), the sensor achieves exceptionally high accuracy – with a detection limit of just 60 µg/m³ – and at the same time covers a wide measuring range of up to 6 g/m³.
A special feature: the sensor unit is fully thermally stabilized, uses an LED drift-compensating reference detector and enables automatic zero-point calibration – without any external calibration gases. The system therefore guarantees long-term stability and reliability in the field.
From the initial simulation to validation in practical testing, the sensor underwent targeted development with minimal iteration effort. The modular KNESTEL design also allows for quick reuse and customer-specific adaptation – a clear advantage for industrial users who rely on flexible, low-maintenance and precise measurement technology.
The successful completion of the project means that a near-series sensor system is now available that enables continuous monitoring of ozone concentrations directly in the plasma process. Companies that rely on innovative disinfection technologies benefit from increased process reliability, documented indoor air quality and a sensor module that is easy to integrate.
